Obituary of Jane Gears

IRONDEQUOIT - age 85, was called home to heaven on October 11, 2021 at the St. John’s Home of Rochester, NY after an extended illness. Jane was born in Rochester, NY, to Herb and Eva Conge. Jane graduated from Charlotte High School and Nazareth College. She was married in 1958 to John J Schantz (predeceased) and lived on air force bases and in the US and UK before settling in West Irondequoit, where they raised their four children. She was re-married to Robert Gears Sr, and together they worked for years to create a beautiful set of stained-glass panels of Christ’s life, which they donated to their church. Art and inspiring others in creativity was her lifelong passion. She was able to make beauty out of rocks, stained glass, canvas, wood and anything else she touched. Painting rocks with her grandchildren was her favorite pastime. Her generous and caring spirit led her and Bob to Clowning; visiting hospitals, bringing joy, laughter and hope to sick children. Jane was an advocate for everyone and had a strong sense of faith and a loving nature. Jane lived a full and adventurous life. She loved boating, hiking, skiing, golfing, and gardening to name a few. She was famous for her Thanksgiving Dinners, Christmas cookies, and for being everybody's number one cheerleader. She will be warmly remembered for cheering at recitals and sporting events her entire life and as a cub scout and girl scout leader. Jane was a blessing for all, was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Jane’s family extends a special thanks to friends who provided companionship and to the staff at the St. John’s Home for their compassionate care. Jane is survived by her children John Schantz, Jr. (Julie), Stephen Schantz (JoEllyn), Christine Schantz Speedy, and Greg Schantz (Jenilee); stepchildren Deborah (Carla) Gears and Valerie (Todd) Hockenberger; 15 grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Predeceased by her husband Robert Gears; parents Herb and Eva Conge; sisters Darlyn Bilodeau and Joyce Conge; stepson Robert Gears, Jr. The family will hold a private celebration of life. Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Art Gallery Tribute Fund: Creative Workshop for Kids.
