Obituary of Elizabeth Sue Benner

Elizabeth Sue Benner, 63, died on April 28, 2020 after dealing long and courageously with cancer. She died at home, in her bed, as she hoped. Her husband was by her side and holding her hand as she passed “into that good night”. And it was a peaceful passing. Elizabeth was born in Ithaca, NY on November 29, 1956 to Shirley Schipper and George Merz. She was the oldest of six children. Elizabeth was a graduate of Tully High School as well as Onondaga Community College, both near Syracuse, NY. She also taught numerous workshops throughout the years on a variety of topics in Rochester, NY. Her proudest achievement, however, was being a long-time loving wife and an equally wonderful mother. Elizabeth created a cozy home full of pets, where everyone was welcome. She surrounded the home with glorious gardens for all to enjoy, especially the birds. On August 25, 1984, Elizabeth married Thomas W. Benner. She is survived by her husband Tom; her daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Dan Dominguez of Buffalo, NY; her son Emerson of Rochester, NY; all of her very caring siblings and their respective spouses; plus many nieces and nephews along with other extended family. The burial is scheduled for April 30, 2020 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Elizabeth was a rare jewel who endured so much for so long, yet continued to give so much to so many.
